Why James Hardie® outperforms wood and standard vinyl.

James Hardie fiber cement is engineered to handle what Iowa throws at it — repeated freeze-thaw cycling, summer humidity, hail, and high winds. It will not rot, warp, or become a food source for insects. And unlike wood siding, it does not require annual painting or sealing.

The Hardie product line — HardiePlank® lap, HardieShingle®, HardiePanel® vertical, and HardieTrim® — allows us to create a complete exterior system with a consistent, premium look from a single manufacturer.

As a certified Hardie installer, we meet James Hardie's installation standards — which is required to pass through the full 30-year product warranty to you. Non-certified installers cannot offer this warranty transfer.

Engineered for climates like Iowa's

James Hardie produces HardiePlank® specifically for different climate zones. The product sold in the Midwest is formulated for our freeze-thaw cycles, humidity swings, and temperature extremes — it is not a generic product shipped everywhere. That regional formulation matters for long-term performance.

Fiber cement is made from Portland cement, sand, and cellulose fiber. That composition makes it dimensionally stable — it does not expand and contract with moisture the way wood does. It also makes it non-combustible, which is why it carries a Class A fire rating.

ColorPlus® technology — the factory finish advantage

ColorPlus® is James Hardie's factory-applied paint process. Panels are coated in a controlled environment with multiple coats of a proprietary finish, then baked. The result holds color significantly longer than siding painted on-site after installation. Hardie backs ColorPlus with a 15-year limited warranty on the finish.

HardiePlank® vs. HardieShingle®

HardiePlank® is the horizontal lap siding profile and the most commonly installed Hardie product. Available in smooth and wood-grain textures, it works on virtually any home style.

HardieShingle® mimics the look of cedar shingles and is frequently used on gable ends, upper stories, and accent areas to add texture and visual interest alongside HardiePlank® lap panels.

HardieTrim® boards match the siding material at corners, windows, doors, and fascia — creating a consistent surface that holds paint at the same rate across every exterior element.

Key specs at a glance

James Hardie siding — common questions.

Is James Hardie siding worth it?

For homeowners who want fire resistance, superior hail and impact protection, and a factory-finished product that holds color 15+ years, Hardie is worth the premium over vinyl. If budget is the primary constraint, vinyl siding is a strong alternative. We will quote both so you can compare real numbers.

How long does James Hardie siding last?

Hardie carries a 30-year limited product warranty and a 15-year limited warranty on the ColorPlus® factory finish. With proper installation and repainting when the finish eventually fades, fiber cement siding can last 50 years or more.

Does Hardie hold up to Iowa hail?

James Hardie fiber cement is significantly more impact-resistant than vinyl. It is tested and approved for high-wind zones and withstands hail better than most competing products.

How is Hardie installed differently than vinyl?

Hardie is roughly 2.5x heavier than vinyl per square foot, requires different fastener types and schedules, and cannot be nailed the same way. Proper installation is critical for warranty validity. Our crews are trained on Hardie's specific installation requirements.
